About Course

This Vietnamese-language learning project was designed for children of Vietnamese families living in Finland. It was developed after a comprehensive needs analysis of the learners’ linguistic gaps, learning preferences, and cultural backgrounds. The project features a playful, game-based and highly interactive curriculum grounded in learner-centered principles and a flipped-classroom model, allowing each student to practice independently at home while receiving personalized support in class. Achieving accurate Vietnamese pronunciation is quite challenging for children of Vietnamese descent born in Finland, especially when their parents do not use Vietnamese to communicate with them at home. Furthermore, since the level of pronunciation accuracy varies significantly among students in a Vietnamese language class, teachers cannot dedicate their entire instructional time to helping individual students practice their pronunciation. Consequently, this module has been developed to support students in practicing their pronunciation independently, under the guidance of their teacher. / Việc phát âm tiếng Việt chính xác là một thách thức khá lớn đối với trẻ em gốc Việt sinh ra tại Phần Lan, đặc biệt khi cha mẹ không sử dụng tiếng Việt để giao tiếp với các em ở nhà. Hơn nữa, do trình độ phát âm của học sinh trong cùng một lớp học tiếng Việt khác nhau đáng kể, giáo viên không thể dành toàn bộ thời gian giảng dạy để hỗ trợ từng em luyện phát âm riêng. Vì vậy, mô-đun này được xây dựng nhằm hỗ trợ học sinh tự luyện tập phát âm một cách độc lập dưới sự hướng dẫn của giáo viên.

This module is designed to help learners consolidate the Vietnamese grammatical system—a system they have already acquired naturally through interactions with their parents at home. The module is based on the *Basic Vietnamese* (*Tiếng Việt cơ sở*) textbook by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vu Van Thi. Students will review the core characteristics of Vietnamese grammar—a language that does not employ morphological inflection, relying instead on function words and word order to convey grammatical meaning. The curriculum focuses on key topics typically encountered at the elementary level, including temporal adverbs, negation, various question structures, classifiers, systems of address, auxiliary verbs, and the use of correlative conjunctions in compound sentences.

Through cartoons, children's shows, and age-appropriate game shows, children are exposed to Vietnamese in natural and engaging communication contexts. This helps them expand their vocabulary, improve their listening comprehension, and develop more accurate pronunciation. In addition, these programs introduce Vietnamese culture, traditions, and ways of life, helping children strengthen their connection to their roots and preserve their Vietnamese cultural identity while living overseas.
